The Watchman's Call: Discerning Truth in a Deceptive Age
Authored by: Pastors Emmanuel Oduor & Mitch Lusina

In this generation marked by spiritual confusion and the dilution of biblical truth, the call of the watchman is more urgent than ever. As pastors and stewards of the Word, we have been entrusted with the grace to watch, teach, and speak into the spiritual climate of our time. Guided by the Spirit, we are committed to equipping the Body of Christ to discern deception, remain grounded in sound doctrine, and navigate the increasing complexities of modern spirituality. In these end times, the Church must not only be awake but accurately aligned.
Humanity's Longing and the Drift from God
The fall of man in Genesis 3 initiated a deep spiritual void in humanity a longing for connection, purpose, and meaning. In the absence of true communion with God, countless forms of worship emerged. These alternative spiritual expressions, while seemingly diverse, often divert from the worship of the one true God. This article explores the journey of worship from Genesis to the modern era, with a focus on spiritual trends and their implications for the end-time Church.
The Biblical Origin of Worship
Genesis 4:25 marks the earliest biblical record of people calling upon the name of the Lord. Worship through the lineage of Seth represented humanity's return to God. However, idolatrous practices soon emerged:
Genesis 31:30 – Rachel steals her father Laban’s household gods (teraphim), highlighting early idol worship and spiritual compromise within patriarchal households.
Exodus 20:4-5 – God forbids image-based worship, but Israel frequently violates this, influenced by Egypt and neighboring pagan cultures (e.g., Exodus 32: Golden Calf).
Idolatry becomes a repeated theme in Israel's story, manifesting in syncretism—the blending of Yahweh worship with pagan practices.
Other Early Forms of Worship
Archaeological findings suggest religious behavior dates back over 300,000 years, indicating that worship predates structured religion. Polytheism and monotheism both emerged, with various deities—Baal, Molech, Asherah, Dagon revered by surrounding cultures. Worship systems became cultural norms that often opposed God's intended design.
Worship in Global Perspective
Modern estimates suggest there are over 4,200 religions and spiritual traditions globally. From tribal rituals to formal doctrines, the evolution of religious systems continues to shape how people understand the divine. Christianity today has over 2.8 billion adherents, yet we see an increasing shift toward personalized spirituality.
According to the Pew Research Center, there is a decline in traditional religious affiliation and a rise in spiritual but non-religious movements. These often emphasize personal experience over biblical truth. Many of these movements gained traction in the 19th and 20th centuries, blending Christian themes with esotericism and Eastern mysticism.
A Biblical Worldview of Worship
Colossians 1:16 (KJV) proclaims:
“For by him were all things created... all things were created by him, and for him.”
Worship was always meant for God alone. But the fall introduced counterfeit systems. The enemy’s agenda has always been to divert worship from God toward deception, idols, and spiritual confusion.
The Battle for Truth in the Information Age
While technology has advanced the reach of the Gospel, it has also become a double edged sword. Doctrinally unsound teachings, once obscure, are now widespread through digital platforms. This has fostered a culture of "self-styled theology," where personal preferences often override biblical truth.
2 Corinthians 11:14 (KJV) warns:
“Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”
Many modern practices seem harmless or even helpful, but often have roots in ancient paganism or Eastern mysticism:
Popular Practices Influencing the Church Today:
Neopaganism: Repackaged pre-Christian beliefs (e.g., Wicca, Celtic Druidism)
NRMs (New Religious Movements): Scientology, some New Age sects, cults
"Nones": No formal religion but consider themselves "spiritual"
Astrology & Tarot: Divination practices based on stars and cards
Eastern Meditation & Mindfulness: Detachment from self, merging with cosmic consciousness
Yoga & Kundalini Yoga: Practices aimed at awakening mystical energy
Mantras: Repetitive words that replace God’s Word with slogans
Astral Projection: Out-of-body travel via demonic guidance
Nature Worship & Herbalism: Exalting creation above the Creator
Techno-altars: Digital spaces used for occult engagement
Dangers of These Practices:
Spiritual bondage and demonic encounters
Emotional instability and mental distress
Alienation from God
Open doors to affliction and oppression
The End-Time Church and the Crisis of Compromise
1 Timothy 4:1 (NKJV) warns:
"In latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons."
Revelation 2:14-15 condemns the toleration of Balaam's and Nicolaitan doctrines symbols of compromise and corruption. These patterns are evident in today’s Church through:
Manifestation techniques and affirmations
Prayers to saints or angels
Non-biblical meditations and visualizations
Veneration of objects (e.g., oil, water, salt)
Algorithm-based sermons replacing the Holy Spirit’s voice
We must urgently discern between Spirit-led worship and counterfeit spirituality. Syncretism is corrupting the altar of the Lord with practices that are neither biblical nor Christ-centered.
A Call to Action: How the Church Must Respond
Return to the Word: Discernment begins with Scripture.
John 10:27 — "My sheep hear My voice..."
John 14:6 — "I am the way, the truth, and the life..."
Sharpen Discernment: Evangelists and leaders must develop spiritual sensitivity to identify and resist deception.
Rise in Priesthood: Operate in greater authority, confronting spiritual darkness with truth and power.
Grow in Knowledge and Influence: Like Daniel and Joseph, believers must excel in worldly systems to influence them for God.
Demonstrate Power: The true Gospel must be accompanied by power and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Adhere to Sound Doctrine: Submit to biblically grounded teachers.
Live in Obedience and Holiness: A consecrated life is a powerful witness in a compromised world.
Final Words: The Only True Foundation
Jesus Christ is the only foundation for truth. All other pursuits are empty without Him. God’s desire is that all would be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.
Acts 4:12 reminds us:
"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
If you are reading this and seeking truth, we invite you to meet the One who is Truth Himself—Jesus Christ.
A Prayer for Salvation:
"Lord Jesus, I want a personal relationship with You. I acknowledge my sin and believe You died on the cross for me. I turn from sin and place my faith in You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
If you prayed this prayer, welcome to the family of God! We encourage you to join a Bible-believing church and begin growing in your faith. If you have questions or need support, reach out through our website. We are here to walk with you.
God bless you richly.
